The term "coach" originated in the 15th century in Hungary. It was used to describe a type of carriage that brought people to their destinations. In the 1800s it became a metaphor for a person who helps another accomplish a goal. Today, many companies engage coaches to facilitate development. Often it is a requirement of all leaders to "coach" their employees while others use external coaches, especially when internal measures aren't working. In this presentation, we will explore the types of coaching; styles of coaching and how to find the right coach for your key employees.

Wanda Swain, President of Piedmont HR and an associate of Piedmont Industry, is a certified Executive and Leadership Coach and HRCI- and SHRM-credentialed Professional in Human Resources. Wanda specializes in leadership development and continuous process improvement. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and began her MBA/MHA while at Cone Health through Pfeiffer University. She is a mentor for the UNC-G Bryan School of Business MBA Capstone Program since 2018.

After ten years as a high school English teacher, Wanda directed her career toward Human Resources - Training, Organizational Development and Employee Relations - in a manufacturing environment as a continuous improvement trainer and facilitator of self-directed teams. She led the implementation of a Pay-for Skill program and created assessments and skills-based training programs. Using an internal consultant approach, Wanda designed, developed and delivered training programs for management, front-line leaders and shop-floor employees. As part of the Acquisitions Team, Wanda led the organizational development projects to successfully blend East Coast and West Coast cultures and leadership initiatives. Her HR experience was expanded by her role as HR Manager of Employee Performance for Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital (Cone Health).

As the Vice President of Human Resources of an anesthesia management company, Wanda worked as coach, trainer and mentor to directors, managers and employees in hospitals and healthcare facilities advising on policies and procedures, employment laws and employee relations. Wanda restructured and redefined the human resources function for the multi-site, multi-company organization and was a guest speaker at the National Annual Conference of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA.

In 2013, Piedmont HR was created and Wanda’s vision of providing programs directed  towards people and process improvement was realized. As a TTI Value-added Associate, Wanda uses the Science of Self® suite of assessments, and CPP’s Myers-Briggs Step I and Step II instruments as vital tools in her practice.

Wanda is a Six Sigma Green Belt and is certified in Value Stream Mapping through Lean Enterprise. She is also certified and credentialed as a facilitator of Franklin Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and 5 Choices. Believing that core, time-tested leadership models are fundamental to personal and professional development, she is also a certified facilitator of Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership II, and DDI Leadership modules.

Wanda is a former President of the Board for the Triad Coaching Connection (a 501(c)(6) organization of over 100 coaching professionals in the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem).
